It's a fact: Milwaukee winters can be brutal, and sleeping outside can be hazardous to your health. Even deadly. The most common casualties are fingers and toes that are damaged or lost to frostbite.
During cold snaps, overnight shelters fill to capacity. Many are left out in the cold. Literally. Although Repairers of the Breach offers a daytime sanctuary, our resource center opens at 7:00PM and remains open all night long when temperatures fall below 32 degrees. Throughout the years, we have accommodated between 15 and 50 stranded men and women during these frigid nights. We are grateful to be able to fill this gap for the people in greatest need—thanks to our many compassionate donors.

Falling temperatures increase more than our hours of operation. Costs rise for utilities, maintenance and supervision (by staff hired from our member population). We face several hundred dollars in additional costs each time we remain open overnight. It's a financial burden, true enough, but the senseless loss of lives is an even greater burden. Repairers of the Breach must be able to continue filling this gap. And we need your help to do it.
When severe temperatures are upon us, we ask for your support. During these times, we have an ongoing need for cold-weather items for our members staying overnight, such as blankets, sleeping bags and other protective gear. Please check our needs list in winter for other items that provide comfort to our members during times of great hardship.
Thank you for your compassionate caring in every season!
