Emergency Warming Room Report

As temperatures drop, the needs of Milwaukee's homeless become a matter of life and death. Overnight shelters fill. Survival is at stake. When wind chill temperatures reach 10 degrees, we open our doors at 10PM, providing overnight comfort in the form of safety, warmth, rest, nourishment and fellowship for those otherwise left out in the cold.
Although a daytime refuge by design, this winter the Repairers of the Breach Center extended its coverage to unsheltered men and women on 51 brutally cold nights this past season. Thanks to emergency funding from private donors like you, we were able to provide this life-saving service during the record-breaking 2013-14 winter season.
Why do we do this? When overnight shelters that offer a bed and more comforts are filled to capacity on especially frigid nights, homeless persons who are still out in the cold can come to us. People in distress are referred to us through the 211 emergency line (provided by IMPACT) and by word of mouth. We welcome and comfort them. We provide a chair, blankets, coffee, a snack, a shower and clean clothing. We have a specialized staff for security, and our homeless men and women are housed in separate areas on the first floor. We provide a safe and warm environment to all. This is one of a number of ways we fill a gap in the local safety net.
We are very grateful to our generous and compassionate donors to our 2013-14 Share the Warmth Emergency Fund. We offer our thanks to each and every one of you for being a repairer of the breach!
