Events

Labor Day Community Involvement

We are hosting and feeding between 250-500 homeless people on Monday, September 6th. On that day, as on other holidays, the majority of other programs serving homeless people are closed. We are happy to provide our people with a place to go. We will open at 7 am and close at 5 pm. We will serve the noon meal between 11:30-1:30 pm. On one summer holiday in the past our count was 450--the highest number we ever hosted.

This year our event will have a new shape. Due to construction equipment, we cannot use our " Garden of Peace ." Instead, the City has given us permission to block off a portion of 14th St.

Please be aware that homeless people lead and govern this event. Our homeless leadership, plus a delegation from Vets Place Central (a residential life formation program for homeless vets) will be in the heavy duty roles, especially the cooking/serving and front desk situations.

Viewing of Can We Become Homeless? June 30th

Results of an unusual urban anthropology experiment were featured in June with the premiere showing of “Can We Become Homeless?” a 40 minute video on the experiences of 25 Marquette University graduate students, who voluntarily took jobs paying between $7 and $8 per hour in an attempt to avoid homelessness for one semester.

On hand for the showing and subsequent discussion was retired Marquette University Professor Jill Florence-Lackey, who produced the video and conducted the experiment, and MacCanon Brown, Executive Director of Repairers of the Breach, Milwaukee’s only daytime resource center for the homeless. Several of the students who participated in the experiment also attended.
