Feeding The Homeless at Repairers of the Breach on Labor Day - Sept 1, 2014
Literacy Program Resumes at Center - March 24, 2014
On Monday, March 24, our cornerstone literacy program for adult basic education (ABE) resumed at the Repairers of the Breach Center. One-on-one ABE training is now available to our members on a walk-in basis every Monday and Wednesday from 9AM-12PM, in conjunction with Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services. We are pleased to report that six individuals joined the program on the first day! The new participants took the TABE test (Test of Adult Basic Education) to determine their starting skill level in reading, math and other subjects.
Previously offered in our damp, dingy basement, this life-changing program is now located in a brand new two-room suite on the third floor of our newly renovated center. This important area is dedicated to the memory of a man who wanted to make a lasting impact on homeless men and women through improved literacy. The Jim Heidenreich Learning Center consists of a classroom and attached library for studying and general reading.
The classroom build-out was fully funded by the Harley-Davidson Foundation, and Gesu Parish contributed funds toward the library build-out. The 16-Inch Society slow pitch softball league donated additional funds to provide a naming opportunity in memory of the late Jim Heidenreich. Funds to purchase classroom furnishings were donated by the Coldwell Banker Charitable Foundation, and funds to purchase library furnishings were donated by the young adults of St. Matthias Parish.
